4 Reasons to Watch Documentaries to Improve Your Level in Your Target Language

When it comes to learning a new language, people have wide range of methods and techniques they recommend. Some prefer the old-school method which mean using textbooks and offline materials. Others, prefer using computers and modern technology. Based on my own experience in learning English, watching documentaries was extremely helpful in improve my progress pace. Here are 4 reasons why you should consider watching documentaries to improve your level in your target language:

1# Learning the pronunciation and the spelling as well

Reading is an excellent exercise to improve your vocabulary and spelling. However, if you spend a lot of time only reading, you won’t know how the word is pronounce. This concept requires having the subtitle feature activated. This will allow you to see the word’s spelling and hear the pronunciation in the same time. It will help you to know if any silent letter the word has or if it has a unique way to pronounce it.

2# Learn new vocabulary with pictures creates memories

Watching a documentary is a great way to link learning new vocabulary with your memory. When you hear a certain vocabulary while you are watching images linked to it, it will create a better understanding of the meaning and the usage of the vocabulary. As Jim Kwik said “Knowledge + Emotion = Long Lasting Memory”.

3# It use an Academic Language

There are many types of documentaries but what I am talking about is the type of documentaries which contains Academic Language. Why? Because academic vocabulary is understood by all the native speaker and it keep appearing more often than non-academic vocabulary. For example, watching American movies to learn English is a good way to improve your English. However, most of the time they contain slangs which is not really useful. In fact, they might be confusing as often times it makes sense only in the movie. Academic Language is more useful as you will see it in the books, news and all native speaker understands it.

4# Documentary movies keep repeating certain vocabulary over and over

In most cases, the documentary will keep repeating certain vocabulary over and over with different sceneries. This is because each documentary has a certain point of view to represent. Throughout the documentary you will keep hearing certain vocabulary over and over which will make you fully understand the meaning of the vocabulary without and doubts or confusions.

Watching documentaries can be very boring for many people. It requires you to pay a lot of attention to the explanation the narrative makes. For many people this is not really a fun way to learn a language. I recommend language learners to watch one documentary from while to while as it will make them diversify their learning methods and flourish their progress.

Thanks for reading

Poison Positivity

When I was in my third year in college, I had an acute depression. I had very bad grades and I had a lot of family problems. Starting from 2018, I decided to listen and read about self-development. I immersed myself in this world and I replaced my negativity with positivity. I literally brainwashed my brain. After I have have solved my depression problem completely, I started looking unsatisfied on many self-development post. I realized that often time, being optimistic is just a way of escaping the brutal truth. It is actually will make you less happy instead of more happy. Even too much positivity is bad for you.

Why You Cannot Achieve More Than One Goal in The Same Period of Time

One of the most common traps people fall into is trying very hard to achieve more than one goal in the same period of time. They might be very motivated to master more than one skill so they create a schedule to help them work on all their goals in a daily basis. They keep working hard on multiple goals in the same time for months without getting a satisfying result. Then they start to question their strategy in learning each skill and change it and keep repeating the same cycle again. They start to work on one goal all the time but after two or three weeks they start to work in more than one goal and the cycle keep repeating.             What I mean by a goal or a skill in this post is something like, improving your academic performance, master a musical instrument, learn a language, have a good body shape, learn drawing, be a great engineer, be great writer, learn a coding language, …etc. These are just some examples but you ...

2022/05/04 (Why Calculus is Difficult?)

During our 12 years in school, we have learned all algebra techniques such as additions, substructions, division and multiplication. In each one of these techniques, there are many techniques. If you have an exam, you know which techniques you need to study to pass the exam.  However, in Calculus it is more complicated. In each problem, you need to use a technique before you start solving the problem. In each exam, you will have to use many techniques before you start solving any problem. You are supposed to be able to use each one of these techniques. But there are so many techniques and you don't remember all of them because you haven't used them since long time ago. Or you might be not sure which technique you need to use because some problems can be solved by more than one specific technique.  So when students start studying Calculus, the teacher assumes that they already know all the simple techniques that schools teach. Calculus teacher keep repeating this phrases ...
